Some Chadians are returning to the nation's capital, N'Djamena, to survey damage one week after rebels invaded the city and attempted to oust the president.

A few shops have re-opened, but the city's main market was destroyed in fighting between rebel forces and government troops. Chadians (, such as office worker Ahmat Ahidjo,) say many places were looted.

Soldiers are patrolling the streets, and there are reports that the rebels are regrouping east of the city.

Violence left more than 160 people dead, and it forced tens of thousands to flee their homes to eastern Chad or into neighboring Cameroon. Some of those displaced by the violence (, including a woman named Rosinne,) say conditions in refugee camps are terribly harsh.

The United Nations and aid agencies are calling for the re-opening of the humanitarian corridor between Cameroon and Chad. The route was closed during the fighting.
