국제언론감시단체인 ‘국경없는 기자들’은 중국이 다가오는 베이징 올림픽을 앞두고 인권과 언론의 자유풍토를 개선하지 않았다고 밝혔습니다.
‘국경없는 기자들’은 7일 발표한 성명에서 중국 당국이 2001년에 올림픽경기를 유치하는 조건으로 인권을 개선하겠다는 특별한 약속을 했었다고 지적했습니다. 그러나 ‘국경없는 기자들’은 상황은 여전히 나아지지 않았으며, 2007년 한해에만도 중국에서 180명의 외국 기자들이 체포되거나 습격과 협박을 당했다고 밝혔습니다.
파리에 본부를 두고 있는 이 단체는 또한 현재 중국에서 80여명의 언론인과 인터넷 사용자들이 구금돼 있다고 말했습니다.
그러나 이 단체는 최근 중국 당국이 타이완을 위해 간첩활동을 한 혐의로 거의 3년동안 투옥당했던 홍콩의 칭췡 기자의 석방을 환영했습니다.

An international media freedom group says China has failed to improve human rights and press freedom conditions ahead of the upcoming Beijing Olympics.
In a statement issued today (Thursday), Reporters Without Borders said Chinese authorities gave specific promises in 2001 to improve human rights as a condition to hosting the Olympic Games. But the group said the situation has not improved. It said 180 foreign reporters were arrested, attacked or threatened in China during 2007.
The Paris-based group also said about 80 journalists and Internet users are imprisoned in China. It said the overall number of political prisoners runs into the thousands.
But the group welcomed the recent release of a veteran Hong Kong reporter who served nearly three years in prison on charges of spying for rival Taiwan. Chinese authorities released reporter Ching Cheong Tuesday. He had served about half of his five-year sentence.
