미국의 로버트 게이츠 국방장관은 나토 회원국들이 아프가니스탄에 병력을 증파하지 않는데에 대해 또 다시 좌절감을 표시했습니다.
그러나 게이츠 장관은 7일 리투아니아 수도 빌니우스에서 열린 나토 국방장관회의에서 탈레반 저항세력과 싸우는 나토 군의 임무가 실패할 위험이 있다고 생각하지 않는다고 밝혔습니다.
이에 앞서 얍 데 후프 쉐퍼 나토 사무총장은 아프가니스탄에서 나토군의 실패가 곧장 세계 다른 지역에 대한 새로운 테러 공격으로 이어질 것이라고 경고했습니다.
쉐퍼 총장은 나토가 탈레반 무장세력과 싸우고 있는 아프가니스탄에서 군사적 효율성을 제고하기 위한 구체적인 조치를 취해야 할 것이라고 말했습니다.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates has again voiced disappointment that some NATO members have not sent combat troops to Afghanistan.
But Gates told reporters today (Thursday) he does not think the NATO mission, aimed at battling Taliban insurgents, is in danger of failing. Gates spoke on the sidelines of a two-day meeting of NATO defense chiefs in Vilnius, Lithuania.
Earlier, NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer warned that any NATO failure in Afghanistan could prompt new terrorist attacks in other parts of the world. He also said NATO must boost its military effectiveness in Afghanistan.
The NATO chief also said the ministers had discussed the alliance role in Serbia's breakaway Kosovo province.
NATO is facing complaints from alliance-member Canada, which says it is not receiving sufficiently-wide support for its strong military presence in southern Afghanistan.
