이번 수정안은 두건을 착용하는 동안 수업에 참석할 수 없는 이슬람 여성들을 언급하며, 어느 누구도 고등 교육을 받을 기회를 박탈당할 수 없다고 명시하고 있습니다.
터키의 집권 정의개발당과 보수 야당 국민행동당은 이번 수정안을 지지했습니다. 이번 수정안은 또 터키의 압둘라 굴 대통령의 지지도 얻었습니다.
Turkey's parliament has approved a constitutional amendment to lift a decades-old ban on women wearing slamic head scarves at the country's universities.
In a vote early Thursday, the bill won more than the two-thirds majority required for it to become law. A second and final vote is scheduled for Saturday.
The text of the amendment says no one can be deprived of their right to higher education, alluding to Muslim women who could not attend classes while wearing head scarves.
Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party and the right-wing Nationalist Movement Party backed the measure. The measure also won the support of Turkey's President Abdullah Gul, who says universities should be open to all beliefs and views.
But the opposition Republican People's Party says the amendment threatens Turkey's secular traditions.
