수퍼 화요일, 공화당 존 맥케인 대승 (E)


미국 민주, 공화 양당이 5일 이른바 '수퍼 화요일'에 각각 20여 개주에서 대통령 후보를 뽑는 경선을 실시한 가운데, 공화당은 존 맥케인 상원의원이 9개주에서 승리해 최종 후보로 거의 확정됐습니다.

민주당은 힐러리 클린턴 의원과 바락 오바마 의원이 아직 승부를 가리지 못했습니다.

공화당 존 멕케인 상원의원은 캘리포니아, 뉴욕, 일리노이주 등 3개주를 비롯해 모두 9개주에서 대승을 거뒀습니다.

멕케인 상원의원의 뒤를 쫒고 있는 미트 롬니 전 메사추세츠 주지사는 메사추세츠주를 비롯해 적은 규모의 7개 주에서 승리했습니다.

마이크 허커비 주지사는 남부 5개 주에서 승리했습니다.

반면 민주당의 클린턴 의원은 캘리포니아와 뉴욕주를 비롯해 8개주에서, 오바마 의원은 조지아와 일리노이 등 13개주에서 승리를 거뒀으며, 양측 간 승리를 확정짓지 못했습니다.

Republican Senator John McCain was a big winner in the multi-state party presidential nominating contests known as Super Tuesday, while Democratic Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama each scored key victories.

McCain surged ahead of his Republican rivals by winning nine states, including three of the nation's most populous -- California, New York and Illinois. (McCain also won in his home state of Arizona, Connecticut, Delaware, Missouri, New Jersey, and Oklahoma).

His rival Mitt Romney won seven smaller states, including Massachusetts, the state where he served a term as governor. (Romney also won Colorado, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, and Utah, and Alaska).

Former Governor Mike Huckabee won five mostly southern states (-- his home state of Arkansas as well as Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and West Virginia).

Meanwhile, Senators Clinton and Obama traded victories in the Democratic Party race and neither emerged as a clear frontrunner.

Clinton won won eight states, including key contests in California and New York, the state she represents in the Senate. (Other Clinton victories came in Arizona, Arkansas, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Oklahoma, and Tennessee).

Obama was victorious in 13 states, most notably Georgia and his home state of Illinois. (Obama also won nominating contests in Alabama, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Utah and Alaska.)

The vote count is still ongoing in the Democratic contest in the southwest state of New Mexico.

Tuesday was the biggest primary voting day of the U.S. election campaign, with more than 20 states holding primaries or caucuses to choose the Republican and Democratic Party presidential nominees.
