Chadian army helicopters and tanks have struck back against rebels besieging the presidential palace in the capital, N'Djamena.
Residents reported heavy fighting for a second day today (Sunday) near the palace, where President Idriss Deby is holed up. A French official says Mr. Deby has refused a French offer to evacuate him.
International aid workers say bodies are scattered in the streets and looters have ransacked shops in the capital.
The French military has air-lifted more than 500 French nationals and other foreigners out of N'Djamena to Gabon's capital, Libreville.
The U.S. Embassy in N'Djamena is urging American citizens who want to be evacuated from N'Djamena to report to the French military and prepare to depart immediately.
In other fighting, Chadian officials say rebels backed by Sudanese helicopters have attacked the eastern town of Adre, near the border with Sudan.
