Afghanistan's upper house of parliament has endorsed a death sentence handed down to a reporter accused of blasphemy.

A court in northern Afghanistan last week sentenced 23-year-old Sayed Perwiz Kambakhsh to die for mocking Islam and the Koran by distributing an article that said the Prophet Mohammad ignored the rights of women.

On Tuesday, the upper House of Elders -- which has no legal authority in the case -- issued a statement endorsing the sentence. It also strongly criticized the international community for putting pressure on the Afghan government and judiciary in the case.

The United States and human right groups have expressed concern about the case.

Under Islamic law stipulated in Afghanistan's constitution, blasphemy is punishable by death. But Afghan President Hamid Karzai has to approve any death sentences before they are carried out.
