티모시 키팅 미 태평양군 사령관은 28일 최근 중국의 미국 함대 입항 거부 관련 분쟁에도 불구하고, 미-중간 과거 대립 관계가 옅어지고 양국 관계가 발전되고 있다고 밝혔습니다.
키팅 사령관은 이달 초 자신의 중국 방문을 언급하며 이같이 밝혔습니다.
키팅 사령관은 그러나 중국 당국자들이 왜 지난 11월 미군 함대의 홍콩 입항을 중국 측이 거부했는지에 대해 설명하지 않았다고 밝혔습니다.
키팅 사령관은 또 이같은 사건이 발생했을 때 양국간 긴장 완화를 위해 전화 핫라인 개설을 재차 언급했다고 밝혔습니다. 중국은 지난해 로버트 게이츠 국방장관의 방중 당시 핫라인 개설에 합의한 바 있습니다. 키팅 사령관은 이 문제를 꺼냈으나 중국은 미국 측에 전화번호를 제공하지 않았다고 밝혔습니다.
한편, 지난 11월 사건 후 처음으로 미군 함대가 28일 홍콩에 입항한 것으로 알려졌습니다.
The head of U.S. forces in the Pacific says recent meetings with his Chinese counterparts were less confrontational than in the past and that both countries are developing better ties despite a recent dispute over port visits of U.S. ships.
Admiral Timothy Keating commented Monday about his visit to China earlier this month and relations between the militaries of both countries.
But he said Chinese officials did not explain why China refused to allow a U.S.aircraft carrier group and two minesweepers permission to dock in Hong Kong in two separate incidents last November.
Keating said he again mentioned having a telephone hotline to reduce tensions duringsuch incidents.
China agreed during a visit by U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates last year to establish a hotline. Keating says he raised the issue but that China has not given theUnited States the necessary telephone number.
In a related development Monday, an American warship arrived in Hong Kong for the first time since November.
