한국이 미국으로부터 북한의 탄도미사일을 요격할 수 있는 미사일을 구입할 계획입니다.
한국 언론들은 20일 군 소식통의 말을 인용해서, 한국 정부가 미국과 SM-6 함대공 미사일의 구매를 위한 협상을 성공적으로 마쳤다고 보도했습니다.
한국은 SM-6 미사일을 미국의 이지스 무기 체계를 갖춘 세종대왕 구축함에 장착할 계획입니다. 한국은 2012년까지 이지스 구축함 2척을 추가로 건조한다는 계획도 갖고 있습니다.
한편 한국의 한 정부 소식통은 SM-6 미사일을 구입한다고 해서 미국의 북아시아 지역 미사일방어계획에 참여하는 것은 아니라고 전했습니다. 하지만 20일자 '코리아타임스'는 다음달 취임하는 한국의 새 정부가 미사일방어계획 참여를 고려하고 있다고 보도했습니다.
일본은 이미 미사일방어계획에 참여했습니다. 하지만 한국은 재정적 부담 외에도 북한과 중국, 러시아를 자극하지 않기 위해서 참여하지 않고 있습니다.

South Korea plans to buy U.S.-built missiles able to intercept and destroy ballistic missiles launched by North Korea.
Reports published Sunday cite an unnamed South Korean military source who says Seoul has successfully completed negotiations with the United States for the future purchase of SM-6 ship-to-air missiles.
The missiles would be installed on a South Korean navy destroyer equipped with the U.S. Aegis weapon system. South Korea plans to build two more Aegis-equipped destroyers before 2012.
The South Korean source said purchasing SM-6 missiles would not mean that Seoul has decided to join a U.S. missile-defense shield in north Asia. But a report published (Sunday) in the "Korea Times" newspaper says the new government preparing to take office next month is considering participation.
Japan has joined the missile-defense plan, but South Korea has not, due to financial constraints and concerns over angering North Korea, China and Russia.
