브리자 부차관보는 그루지야가 미국의 전략적 동맹국이란 점을 강조하고, 올봄에 그루지야에서 의회 선거가 실시될 예정인 가운데 자유롭고 공정한 선거가 되도록 노력해 달라고 그루지야 정부와 야당에 촉구했습니다.
한편 그루지야 야당 지지자 수천명은 20일 지난 5일에 실시된 대통령 선거가 부정이라고 항의하기 위한 집회를 벌였습니다. *****
Georgia's Mikheil Saakashvili has been sworn in to his second presidential term at an elaborate inauguration ceremony in Tbilisi.
Mr. Saakashvili took the oath of office outside the parliament building and told the large crowd that he wanted to improve his country's relations with Russia, even as he moves to bring Georgia into NATO and the European Union.
U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Matthew Bryza met with government and opposition representatives on the eve of the inauguration. He reinforced U.S. support for Georgia as a strategic ally and urged both sides to work toward free and fair parliamentary elections later this spring.
Thousands of opposition supporters attended a rally today to protest what they view as a rigged presidential election, which took place January fifth.
