A bomb tore through a packed bus in southeastern Sri Lanka today (Wednesday), killing at least 26 people and wounding dozens of others.

The government says many schoolchildren were on the bus, which was sprayed with gunfire after the explosion. The attack took place in the town of Buttala (in Monaragala district), around 240 kilometers southeast of the capital, Colombo.

All schools in the area have been closed.

Later, the military says a second bomb struck a military vehicle not far from the first explosion. Several soldiers were wounded. The army has blamed the Tamil Tiger rebels for both attacks.

They come as a repeatedly violated six-year cease-fire between the government and Tamil Tiger rebels formally expired. Norwegian monitors are withdrawing from the country.

The government formally pulled out of a truce two weeks ago, saying rebels had used the pact to regroup and rearm.

Fighting has escalated over the past year -- as the government pushed rebels out of territory in the east. The military is now focusing on the rebel-held north.
