France and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have signed an agreement for Paris to set up a military base in the UAE.
Officials from Mr. Sarkozy's office say the first such French base in the Gulf will have a capacity of 400 to 500 people. There was no immediate indication when the base would be operational.
The two countries also signed a nuclear cooperation deal today (Tuesday) after French President Nicolas Sarkozy arrived in Abu Dhabi from Qatar. He is on the last leg of three-day tour of the Middle East aimed at securing billions of dollars in civilian and military contracts for France.
During his visit to Qatar Monday, Mr. Sarkozy signed several energy deals, including a 700-million dollar contract for a French nuclear engineering company (Areva) to build electricity sub-stations in the Gulf nation.
