앤소니 브렌턴 러시아 주재 영국 대사는 그러나 영국 문화원은 계속 운영될 것이며, 문화원 폐쇄를 위한 러시아 정부의 조치는 국제법과 러시아법을 어기는 것이라고 밝혔습니다.
브렌턴 대사는 앞서 14일 러시아 외무부에 소환돼 영국이 왜 문화원 폐쇄에 반대하는지 설명했습니다.
브렌턴 대사는 러시아 정부의 영국 문화원 폐쇄 방침에도 불구하고, 오는 17일 문화원을 다시 열 것이라고 밝혔습니다.
Russia has imposed sanctions on the British Council after the Council defied a Russian order to close offices in St. Petersburg and Yekaterinburg.

Britain's ambassador to Moscow says British cultural offices will continue to operate in Russia, and says any Russian action to close them would violate international and Russian law.
Ambassador Anthony Brenton was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry Monday to explain why Britain refused to close its offices.
Brenton says the offices will re-open to the public Thursday, despite Russian orders closing them January first.
The ministry also said an inquiry will be opened into what it says are tax debts by the Council's St.Petersburg office.
