케냐의 라일라 오딩가가 이끄는 야당 오렌지 민주 운동은 지난 주 대통령 선거 이후 발생한 폭력을 중단시키기 위해서 새로 선거를 실시할 것을 촉구했습니다. 오딩가 대표는 음와이 키바키 대통령이 부정으로 재선됐다고 주장하고 있습니다.
이런 가운데 부정 선거에 항의에 예정된 대규모 항의 집회를 막기 위해 케냐 폭동 진압 경찰이 이틀째 수도 나이로비 전역에 파병된 상태입니다.
경찰은 4일 시위가 열릴 예정인 우후루 공원 주변을 포위했습니다.
한편 젠다이 프레이저 미 국무부 아프리카담당 차관보가 오늘 케냐에서 키바키 대통령과 오딩가 대표를 별도로 만날 예정입니다.
미국은 케냐 지도자들에게 정치적 화해를 위한 대화를 시작하라고 촉구하고 있습니다.
키바키 대통령은 선거 관련 폭동이 진압되면 야당 지도자들과 만나 대화할 것이라고 밝혔습니다. 지금까지 선거 후 발생한 폭동으로 3백명 이상이 사망했습니다.
Kenya's main opposition party has called for new elections to end days of violent, deadly unrest following last week's disputed vote.
Orange Democratic Movement secretary general Anyang Nyongo made the comments to reporters today (Friday). The party - led by opposition candidate Raila Odinga - says last week's presidential election was rigged to give President Mwai Kibaki a victory.
There was no immediate reaction from the Kibaki government.
Meanwhile, Kenyan police are deployed across Nairobi for a second day to prevent a planned opposition rally. Police circled the capital's Uhuru Park today where organizers planned to hold the protest.
U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Jendayi Frazer is expected in Kenya today (Friday) to meet separately with Mr. Kibaki and Mr. Odinga.
Washington is urging the Kenyan leaders to begin a dialogue aimed at political reconciliation.
