뉴욕에 본부를 둔 국제 인권단체인 ‘휴먼 라이츠 워치’는 지난 2002년 스리랑카 정부와 타밀 호랑이 반군 사이에 체결된 정전협정이 최근 파기됨에 따라 스리랑카에 유엔 감시단의 활동이 필요하다고 밝혔습니다.
‘휴먼 라이츠 워치’는 정전협정 파기 이후 양측의 교전이 증가하면 민간인들이 안전을 확보하기가 더욱 어려워 진다며 이렇게 주장했습니다.
스리랑카는 3일 오후 정전협정을 파기한다는 결정을 노르웨이에 통보했습니다.
하지만 타밀 반군측은 이에 대한 공식적인 반응을 내놓지 않고 있습니다. 지난해 11월 타밀 반군 지도자는 스리랑카 정부가 평화 협상 보다는 무력을 선호한다고 비난했었습니다.
