More than a million revelers converged on Times Square in New York to watch the annual dropping of the ball at midnight (0500 UTC) at the famous intersection.
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the dropping of the lighted ball over Times Square. For the first time, the huge crystal ball used energy efficient LED lights.
The new year had already arrived in most of the rest of the world, including Brazil, where about two million people gathered at the Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro to watch fireworks displays that lasted nearly 20 minutes.
In Baghdad, Iraqis gathered in a downtown shopping neighborhood to light fireworks and celebrate. Some said it was the first time they felt safe enough to welcome the new year outdoors since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.
