Ailing Cuban President Fidel Castro has sent a New Year's message to the Cuban people, saluting them on the approaching 50th anniversary of the country's revolution.
In a letter read on state television Mr. Castro said the anniversary symbolizes a half century of "heroic resistance".
The Cuban leader came to power January first 1959.
The 81-year-old leader has not been seen in public since undergoing emergency intestinal surgery in July 2006, but has appeared in photographs and videos.
In December, state television read a letter from Mr. Castro in which he said he would not obstruct the rise of a new generation of leaders. It was the first suggestion from Mr. Castro that he might permanently step down from the presidency.
