The only inmate at the Guantanamo Bay detention center to be convicted on terrorism charges has been released from an Australian prison after serving more than six years behind bars.
David Hicks did not speak to the media on leaving Adelaide's maximum security prison today (Saturday), but his lawyer read a brief statement in which Hicks thanked his friends and supporters for helping to secure his release.
Hicks was captured in Afghanistan in late 2001 while fighting with the Taliban and spent five years at the U.S. military-run detention center in Cuba. He was the first person to be sentenced at U.S. war crimes tribunals created by the Bush administration to try terror suspects.
Hicks returned to Australia in May under a deal with U.S. military prosecutors in which he pleaded guilty to providing material support to terrorism and agreed to serve the remainder of his sentence on home soil.
