Benedict conducted a traditional midnight mass as Christmas arrived in Rome.
Speaking to the faithful in the Vatican and millions more on television, Benedict compared modern life -- where he says people have no room for others -- to the story of how Jesus was born in a stable because there was no room at the inn.
Later today (Tuesday), Benedict delivers his Christmas Day speech (Urbi et Orbi -- to the City [Rome] and the World). He plans to express holiday greetings in 60 languages.
Earlier Monday, Vatican officials unveiled an unusual nativity scene. Instead of depicting the birth of Jesus in the traditional manger, this year's scene shows the Nazareth home and carpenter's workshop of Joseph and Mary, Jesus' parents.
Midnight mass was also celebrated in the West Bank town of Bethlehem where Christians say Jesus was born.
Tens of thousands of tourists attended -- significantly more than recent years when Israeli-Pallestinian violence kept many foreigners away.
