피에로 파시노 유럽연합 버마 특사는 중국관리들이 중국은 버마의 정치개혁을 이루도록 버마 정부에 압력을 행사하지 않을 것이라고 밝혔다고 말했습니다.
하지만 파시노 특사는 20일 베이징에서 열린 기자회견에서 버마 군부에 대한 중국의 간섭은 버마의 상황을 진전시키는 데 필수적이라고 강조했습니다.
그는 중국이 아시아에서 차지하는 영향력과 유엔 상임 이사국으로서의 위치를 사용해 버마의 위기를 해결하도록 도와야 한다고 촉구했습니다.
하지만 파시노 특사는 중국 관리들은 자신에게 중국은 버마는 스스로 위기를 해결해야 한다고 생각한다는 점을 명확히했다고 말했습니다.
버마 군부는 지난 9월 민주화 시위 참가자들에 무차별 사격을 가해 전세계적인 분노를 불러일으켰습니다.
The European Union's top envoy on Burma says Chinese officials have told him they are unwilling to pressure the Burmese government toward political reform.
Speaking in Beijing today (Thursday) after two days of meetings, Piero Fassino said Chinese intervention in military-ruled Burma is fundamental to achieving any progress.
He urged China to use its position as a leading power in Asia, and as a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council, to help resolve the crisis in Burma.
But, he said Chinese officials have made it clear to him that they believe the Burmese must resolve the crisis on their own.
Burma's military government stirred international anger in September when its security forces opened fired on peaceful pro-democracy protesters.
