남아프리카의 검찰청장은 최근 아프리카민족회의(ANC)의 새 총재로 선출된 제이콥 주마 전 부통령을 부패 혐의로 기소할 만한 충분한 증거를 확보하고 있다고 밝혔습니다.
모코테디 음프셰 청장은 남아프리가의 한 라디오 방송에 출연해 이같이 말했습니다.
주마 전 부통령은 이틀전 타보 음베키 현 대통령을 큰 표차로 누르고 남아프리카의 집권여당인 아프리카민족회의의 총재로 선출됐습니다. 이에 따라 그는 내년에 임기가 끝나는 음베키 대통령에 이어 새 대통령에 취임할 가능성이 높아졌습니다.
음베키 대통령은 지난 2005년 주마 부통령을 국가 무기 판매와 관련해 뇌물을 수수한 혐의로 해임했었습니다. 하지만 그러한 혐의는 모두 기각됐습니다.
주마 전 부통령은 지난해에는 성폭행 혐의에 대해서 무혐의를 인정받은 바 있습니다.
South Africa's chief prosecutor says he has enough evidence to charge newly elected African National Party president Jacob Zuma with corruption.
Mokotedi Mpshe, the acting head of the country's National Prosecuting Authority, discussed the matter today (Thursday) during an interview on a South African talk radio station.
Zuma was elected the new leader of South Africa's ruling party two days ago, soundly defeating President Thabo Mbeki in a bitter race. Mr. Mbeki fired Zuma from his post as the nation's deputy president in 2005 for allegedly accepting bribes in connection with a government arms deal.
Those charges were ultimately dismissed. Zuma was acquitted on rape charges last year.
His election as ANC president this week makes him a clear favorite to succeed Mr. Mbeki in the 2009 elections.
