The newly-elected government of Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd says it will send aircraft and a ship to monitor Japanese whaling in the Antarctic.
Foreign Minister Stephen Smith said today (Wednesday) that the Japanese whaling mission is slaughter and not scientific research.
Smith says the customs and fisheries patrol ship Ocean Viking will follow the Japanese whaling fleet, while aircraft will conduct aerial surveillance.
He said Australia has made a formal diplomatic complaint to Japan and will lead international efforts to protest the whaling mission.
Smith said Australia will also investigate what international legal action can be taken against Japan for breaking international whaling regulations.
The Japanese fleet is also being tracked by ships commissioned by environmentalists who have vowed to use non-violent action to disrupt the whale hunt.
