사우디 언론들은 17일, 압둘라 국왕이 성폭행을 당한 뒤 징역 6개월에 태형 200대를 선고받았던 이 여성을 사면했다고 보도했습니다.
아랍어 일간신문인 ‘알-자지라’신문은 17일, 익명의 소식통을 인용해 이같이 보도했습니다. 압둘라 빈 모하메드 빈 이브라힘 알-셰이크 법무장관은 이 신문에서 국왕이 공공의 이익에 합치된다고 판단할 경우, 법원의 판결을 파기할 수 있는 권한이 있다고 밝혔습니다.
앞으로 사면이 확인될 경우, 이는 사우디 아라비아의 보수적인 성직자들에 대해 사우디 국왕이 공개적으로 도전한 보기드문 사례가 될 것으로 보입니다.
미국의 백악관은 사우디의 이같은 특사 조치를 환영하고, 이것이 올바른 결정이라고 말했습니다.
올해 18살의 이 피해여성은 지난 해 남자 친구와 함께 승용차를 타고 가다 7명의 남자들에게 붙잡혀 성폭행을 당했습니다.
사우디의 엄격한 회교 샤리아법은 여성이 공공장소에서 일가친척이 아닌 외간남자와 만나는 것을 금지하고 있습니다.

A local report says Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah has pardoned the victim of a gang rape, whose sentencing of six months in prison and 200 lashes sparked international condemnation.
The Arabic language daily Al-Jazirah reported the pardon today (Monday) based on its own, unnamed sources. But in the same article, the kingdom's justice minister, Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Ibrahim al-Sheikh, said the king had the right to overrule court judgements, if he considers it in the public interest.
If confirmed, the pardon would represent a rare instance in which Saudi rulers have publicly challenged Saudi Arabia's conservative clerics.
In Washington, the White House welcomed word of the Saudi pardon, saying it was the "right decision."
The victim, who was 18 years old when raped, was attacked at knifepoint by seven men after she was found in a car with a male companion who was not a relative.
