미국은 이란의 미사일 공격 가능성에 대비해 NATO 회원국들을 보호하기 위해 동유럽에 미사일 방어체제를 구축한다는 입장입니다. 하지만 러시아는 이를 자국의 안보에 대한 위협이라며 반대하고 있습니다.
이보다 앞서 러시아는 재래식 무기 감축조약을 탈퇴한 바 있습니다.
Russia's top general says the firing of a weapon from a U.S. missile defense shield to be deployed in eastern Europe could provoke the launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile in return.
Army Chief of Staff Yuri Baluyevsky issued the warning at a news conference in Moscow, where he sharply criticized U.S. plans to deploy an anti-missile system in Poland and the Czech Republic.
He said the firing of an anti-missile rocket could be mistaken by Russian defenses as a ballistic missile aimed at Russia.
U.S. officials say the defense shield is designed to protect NATO countries from possible missile attacks from Iran. Russia calls the shield a threat to its security.
Earlier this week, Russia officially suspended its participation in a key Cold War arms treaty. But Moscow said it would continue talks with Western partners on resuming the Conventional Forces in Europe Treaty.
