수사 당국은 지난 5일 19세의 로버트 호킨스 씨는 오마하 시의 한 상가에 위치한 백화점에서 8명에게 무차별 총격을 가해 사살하고 스스로 목숨을 끊었다고 밝혔습니다. 희생자들은 연말 연시를 준비하기 위해 선물을 사러 상가를 찾은 쇼핑객들이었습니다.
이번 사고로 8명의 사망자 외에 5명이 부상당했으며 그 가운데 적어도 2명은 중태인 것으로 알려졌습니다.
호킨스 씨는 최근 직장을 잃고 여자 친구와 헤어졌던 것으로 알려졌습니다. 호킨스 씨는 사건 몇 시간전 지인에게 전화를 걸어 자신이 자살 메시지를 남겼다고 말했습니다.
호킨스 씨는 이 메시지에서 가족에게 짐이 되고 싶지 않다고 사과하고, 자신은 이제 유명해 질 것이라고 말했습니다.
An apparently troubled young man killed eight people Wednesday in a shooting rampage at a shopping mall in (the midwestern U.S. city/state of) Omaha, Nebraska, before taking his own life.
Authorities say 19-year-old Robert Hawkins randomly opened fire on holiday shoppers from a third-floor balcony in a department store. Terrified customers either fled or barricaded themselves in dressing rooms.
Five other people were wounded, at least two of them critically.
A woman who had taken Hawkins into her home says he recently lost his job at a fast-food restaurant, and had broken up with his girlfriend.
She says the young man called her hours before the shooting and told her he left a suicide note.
Hawkins apologized to his family in the note, saying he did not want to be a burden, and that now, he would be famous.
