이 날 회동은 우라늄 농축 활동을 중단하라는 국제사회의 요구를 이란이 수용하도록 설득하기 위한 마지막 노력의 일환으로, 이번 회동이 실패하면 새로운 유엔 제재가 시작될 계획입니다.
이란은 앞서 이번 주 초 핵 프로그램에 대한 논란을 해결하기 위해 유럽연합 측에 새로운 계획안을 제출할 계획이라고 밝힌 바 있습니다.
그러나 이란 관영통신에 따르면, 마누체르 모타키 이란 외무장관은 이란은 핵 기술 개발 노력을 포기하지 않을 것이라고 밝혔습니다.
솔라나 대표는 유엔 안전보장이사회에 이란이 우라늄 농축을 중단하라는 국제사회의 요구에 부합할 뜻이 있는지 여부를 조만간 전달할 계획입니다. 안보리는 이 보고서를 토대로 이란에 대한 세번째 제재를 가할지 결정하게 될 것으로 보입니다.
한편, 유엔 안보리 5개 상임이사국인 영국과 프랑스, 러시아, 중국, 미국과 독일은 내일 프랑스 파리에서 회담을 가질 계획입니다. 미국 국무부는 이번 회담에서는 이란에 대한 안보리의 세번째 제재에 대해 논의할 것이라고 밝혔습니다.

Today's (Friday's) meeting is seen as a final effort to persuade Iran to comply with international demands to freeze its uranium enrichment activities -- or it will face new U.N. sanctions.
Iran has said its negotiator would put forward "new initiatives" at the talks in an attempt to resolve the dispute about Iran's nuclear program.
However, Iran's official news agency quoted Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki as saying Tehran will not be deterred from its pursuit of nuclear technology.
Solana must soon report to the U.N. Security Council on Iran's willingness to comply with demands to halt sensitive nuclear work. His report could determine whether the council imposes a third set of sanctions on Iran.
