A British teacher accused by Sudanese authorities of insulting Islam and inciting religious hatred has appeared in a Khartoum court to formally face charges.
Journalists were banned from the courtroom after 54-year-old Gillian Gibbons arrived today (Thursday). Representatives from the British Embassy in Khartoum were on hand to meet Gibbons.
Gibbons, a teacher at a private high school, was arrested Sunday after some parents of her students complained that she had allowed her class of seven-year-olds to name a teddy bear Mohammed, the name of Islam's chief prophet. If convicted, she could face up to 40 lashes, six months in prison and a fine.
The case has sparked outrage in Britain. Foreign Secretary David Miliband summoned the Sudanese ambassador as a "matter of urgency" to discuss the incident.
