미 해군의 키어사지함이 강력한 태풍 시드로호로 인해 3,500여명의 사망자와 200여만명의 이재민을 낸 방글라데시에서 구호활동을 지원하기 위해 23일 현지에 도착했습니다.
미군 관계자들은 이날, 키어사지함이 방글라데시 연안에 정박했다고 밝혔습니다. 두번째 미 해군 함정은 앞으로 하루 이틀 사이에 현지에 도착해 구호활동에 합류할 예정입니다.
이 미 해군 함정들은 육로로 접근이 어려운 피해지역의 이재민들에게 식량과 식수 등 구호물품들을 수송할 헬리콥터들을 탑재하고 있습니다.
강력한 태풍 시드르호가 휩쓸고 지나간 지역의 이재민들은 현재 각종 질병과 기아에 직면해 있습니다. 일부 지역에서는 이미 어린이들에게 치명적인 이질설사와 같은 수인성 전염병이 발생하고 있습니다.

A U.S. Navy ship has arrived in Bangladesh to assist in relief efforts, after last week's cyclone killed more than 35-hundred people and displaced at least two million others.
U.S. military officials today (Friday) said the USS Kearsarge has docked off of Bangladesh's coast, with a second ship due to arrive in the next day or two.
The ships are carrying helicopters to deliver much needed supplies to the thousands who have had little access to shelter, food or clean water. The ships will coordinate with the Bangladeshi military.
Many survivors of Cyclone Sidr continue to face disease and starvation. In some places, people are already suffering from water-borne illnesses such as diarrhea, which can be deadly in children.
Adding to the hunger concerns is the fact that the storm wiped out much of the country's crops and fisheries.
