아프가니스탄에서 미군이 이끄는 연합군을 지원하던 일본 해상자위대 급유선이 23일 마지막으로 철수했습니다. 이로써 일본은 지난 6년간 연합군을 지원해오던 임무를 중단했습니다.
후쿠다 야스오 일본 총리는 두 대의 급유선 중 남아있던 한 대를 23일 철수시켰습니다. 후쿠다 총리의 결정은 일본 의회에서 아프가니스탄 지원 임무를 연장하는 법안이 야당의 반대로 부결된 데 따라 나온 것입니다. 기존의 임무는 11월로 종료됐습니다.
야당 지도자들은 해상자위대의 아프가니스탄 지원이 일본평화헌법에 어긋나고, 유엔의 지지도 부족하다는 이유로 임무 연장에 반대하고 있습니다
하지만 후쿠다 총리는 지난주 워싱턴에서 조지 부시 미국 대통령과 만난 자리에서 최대한 빨리 임무를 재개하겠다고 약속했습니다.

Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda's administration brought back the second of two ships to Tokyo after the main opposition party failed to extend the navy mission past its November deadline.
Opposition leaders have refused to back legislation granting a new mandate, arguing that it violates the country's pacifist constitution and lacks a U.N. mandate.
Mr. Fukuda promised U.S. President George Bush during a visit to Washington last week that he will work to restart the operation as soon as possible.
