유엔 마약범죄국은 40억달러 규모에 달하는 아프가니스탄의 점증하는 마약 밀거래가 탈레반 저항세력의 주요 자금원이되고 있다고 밝혔습니다.
마약범죄국의 안토니오 마리아 코스타 국장은 16일, 벨기에에서 열린 한 회의에서 범죄자들과 저항세력, 테러분자들이 최근 아프가니스탄의 기록적인 양귀비 대풍작에 따라 수억달러의 자금을 챙길 준비를 하고 있다고 말했습니다.
코스타 국장은 탈레반에 대한 자금줄을 차단하기 위해 마약거래와의 싸움에서 보다 적극적인 역할을 취하는 것이 나토의 이익이 될 것이라고 강조했습니다.
그러나 나토는 나토 군이 아프가니스탄에서 마약 밀거래를 막을 여력이 없다고 거듭 밝히고 있습니다.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime says Afghanistan's growing opium trade, worth four-billion-dollars, is funding Taliban insurgents.
The head of the agency, Antonio Maria Costa, told a conference in Belgium today (Friday) that criminals, insurgents and terrorists are poised to make hundreds of millions of dollars from recent record poppy harvests.
Costa said it is in NATO's interest to take a more active role in combatting the drug trade in order to cut off funding to the Taliban.
But NATO has repeatedly said its forces do not have the mandate to fight the narcotics trade.
Over the past two years, Taliban insurgents have stepped up their campaign against the 40-thousand strong NATO mission, routinely targeting alliance troops in suicide and roadside bombings.
A recent United Nations report says that Afghanistan's poppy harvests represent more than 90 percent of the world's total opium production.
