이스라엘의 에후드 올메르트 총리는 미국 주도 중동평화회담 이전에 호의의 표시로 400명의 팔레스타인 포로들을 추가석방할 것이라고 밝혔습니다.
올메르트 총리는 12일, 의회 외교국방위원회에서 이스라엘에 대한 공격에서 ‘손에 피를 묻힌 자들’은 이번 석방대상에서 제외될 것이라고 말했습니다.
이스라엘 외무부 대변인은 팔레스타인 포로들의 추가석방은 마무드 압바스 팔레스타인 자치수반과 같은 온건파들을 격려하기 위한 것이라고 설명했습니다.
그러나 대변인은 요르단 강 서안에서의 이스라엘 군 철수가 자칫 무장세력들이 활개칠 수 있는 안보 진공상태를 가져올 것이기 때문에 이스라엘 군을 이 지역에서 철수하는 것과 같은 추가적인 표시는 없을 것이라고 못박았습니다.
팔레스타인측 협상대표인 사엡 에레카트는, 팔레스타인 정부는 이스라엘이 포로를 최고 2천명까지 석방하기를 원하고 있다고 밝혔습니다.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert says he is considering releasing more than 400 Palestinian prisoners in a goodwill gesture ahead of a U.S.-sponsored Middle East peace conference.
Mr. Olmert told the parliamentary Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee today (Monday) that any Palestinians freed will not have, in his words, "blood on their hands" from attacks on Israelis.
An Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman (Mark Regev) says the goal of a prisoner release is to boost moderates like Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
But he says Israel is unlikely to make further gestures such as removing West Bank roadblocks because such moves may create a security vacuum that militant groups could fill.
Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat says the Palestinian government wants Israel to release up to two thousand prisoners. He also rejected a demand Monday from Mr. Olmert that Palestinians acknowledge Israel as a Jewish state.
