페르베즈 무샤라프 파키스탄 대통령은 내년 2월15일 전에 총선을 치를 것이라고 말했습니다. 비상사태가 선포되기 전에 비하면 1달 정도 계획이 늦춰진 것입니다.
무샤라프 대통령은 조지 부시 미국 대통령과 전화통화를 한 후 몇 시간만에 총선 계획을 발표했습니다. 부시 대통령은 무샤라프 대통령이 약속대로 총선을 실시하고 육군 참모총장 직에서도 물러나라는 압력을 가하고 있습니다.
무샤라프 대통령은 8일 국가안보위원회 회의를 마치고 기자들과 만나 군 참모총장 직 사임 의사도 재확인했습니다. 무샤라프 대통령은 현재 논란이 일고 있는 지난달 대선 승리를 대법원이 승인하면, 군 사령관직에서 물러날 것이라고 말했습니다.
한편 백악관은 무샤라프 대통령이 총선 기한을 발표한 데 대해, 환영한다는 입장을 밝혔습니다.
하지만 파키스탄 야당 지도자인 베나지르 부토 전 총리는 무샤라프 대통령의 총선 일정이 분명하지 않다고 비난했습니다. 부토 여사는 또 9일 라왈핀디에서 비상사태선포에 반대하는 집회를 계획대로 강행한다는 입장입니다.
부토 여사의 대변인은 지난 7일 1천명 이상의 당원들이 파키스탄 정부에 체포됐다고 말했습니다.
이와 별도로 파키스탄의 몇몇 도시에서는 비상사태 선포에 반대하는 시위가 계속되고 있습니다.

Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf says general elections will take place before February 15th -- a month later than had been scheduled before the imposition of emergency rule.
The United States and Britain have repeatedly urged General Musharraf to hold elections and resign as army chief since Saturday when he suspended the constitution and declared a state of emergency.
After meeting with Pakistan's National Security Council, President Musharraf also told reporters (today, Thursday) that he will step down as army chief once the Supreme Court approves his disputed re-election victory last month.
The White House later praised Mr. Musharraf for clarifying the timetable for elections.
But Pakistani opposition leader and former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto dismissed General Musharraf's election plan as vague. She pledged to move ahead with plans to hold a mass rally in Rawalpindi on Friday.
A spokeswoman (Farzana Raja) for Ms. Bhutto's party says police have arrested more than one-thousand party activists since Wednesday.
Meanwhile, protests against emergency rule continued in several cities. In the northwestern city of Peshawar, police used batons to beat protesters and fired tear gas to disperse the crowd. Hundreds of lawyers in the capital, Islamabad, were also confronted by riot police.
