The Federal Reserve chairman told Congress' Joint Economic Committee today (Thursday) that the bank is watching developments closely, but gave no hint that interest rates might be cut again to stimulate the economy
Lawmakers and investors say they are worried by turmoil in the credit markets growing out of defaults in the subprime mortgage sector. Bernanke said that situation could get worse, and he urged banks to work with borrowers to avoid defaults.
He also said inflation has improved slightly, but warned that record-high oil prices could spark price hikes in the rest of the U.S. economy.
Key Asian stock indexes plunged between two and three percent in today's (Thursday's) trading, following similar sharp losses in New York trading Wednesday.
