이라크 주둔 미군이 8일 이라크 수감자 5백명을 석방했습니다. 미군은 이 날 바그다드 공항 주변 기지에서 누리 알말리키 이라크 총리가 참석한 가운데 관련 행사도 개최했습니다.
말리키 총리는 석방된 수감자들이 이라크 재건에 기여할 것을 촉구했습니다.
미군에 따르면 이 날 석방된 3천명 외에도 2만5천명의 이라크인이 미군 감옥에 수감돼있습니다. 이라크의 수니파 지도자들은 그동안 수감자가 대부분 수니계 주민이라고 비난해왔습니다.
이와 별도로 바그다드 북부 타르타르 호수에서는 7구의 사체가 추가로 발견됐습니다. 바그다드에서 북쪽으로 100킬로미터 떨어진 이 지역에서는 앞서 22구의 사체가 나왔었습니다.
미군 당국은 지난 7일 바그다드 남부에서 발생한 폭탄 공격으로 미군 1명이 숨졌다고 발표했습니다.

The U.S. military has released 500 Iraqi prisoners in a ceremony today (Thursday) attended by Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.
The prime minister urged those being released to help in the process of rebuilding the country. The ceremony took place at a sprawling U.S. military base (Camp Victory) near the Baghdad airport.
The U.S. military says some 25-thousand Iraqis are still in U.S. custody. Sunni Arab leaders have complained that many of those detained by U.S. and Iraqi forces are Sunnis.
In other news, Iraqi officials say they found seven more decomposing bodies in the Lake Thar Thar area north of Baghdad, days after 22 bodies were found in the area, which is about 100 kilometers north of Baghdad.
Also, the U.S. military says an American soldier was killed in a bomb attack Wednesday south of Baghdad.
