타이완 외무부는 내년 3월의 국민투표는 타이완 국민 대다수의 지지를 받고 있으며, 여기에는 국제사회에 참가하려는 타이완 국민들의 열망이 담겨 있다고 말했습니다. 타이완은 이 국민투표가 독립에 관한 국민투표는 아니라고 부인했습니다.
중국 군사 당국자들은 5일 게이츠 장관과의 회담 중에 타이완 독립에 대한 확고한 반대를 강조했습니다.

Taiwan has asked the United States to clarify a Pentagon statement calling an upcoming referendum on U.N. membership an "independence referendum."
Taiwan's ministry of foreign affairs asked Washington to clarify the statement, which was released Monday as U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates arrived in Beijing.
The ministry says the March referendum is supported by the majority of the people of Taiwan and expresses their desire to participate in the international community. Taiwan denies that it is holding a referendum for independence.
During Monday's meetings with Gates, Chinese military officials stressed their firm opposition to Taiwan's independence.
Chinese state media said vice chairmen of China's Central Military Commission Guo Boxiong and Xu Caihou mentioned the issue during afternoon meetings with Gates.
Guo stressed the importance of properly handling Taiwan and other sensitive issues in China-U.S. relations.
Earlier, China and the United States announced an agreement to open a military hotline and step up military exchanges.
