콘돌리자 라이스 미국 국무부 장관은 5일 이스라엘과 팔레스타인이 조지 부시 미국 대통령의 임기가 끝나는 내년 1월 전까지 평화 협정을 맺을 수 있기를 바란다고 밝혔습니다.
라이스 장관은 이 날 마흐무드 압바스 팔레스타인 자치 정부 수반과 요르단강 서안 지구 라말라 시에서 가진 공동 기자회견에서, 이스라엘과 팔레스타인 양 측은 서로에 대한 이해에 진전을 보여 미국 메릴랜드주에서 열릴 예정인 평화회담에서 협상 타결 발판이 마련될 수 있을 것이라며 이같이 말했습니다.
압바스 수반은 이슬라엘과 미국으로부터 용기를 북돋우는 신호를 받았지만 협상 타결에는 난관이 예상된다고 밝혔습니다.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says she hopes Israel and the Palestinians can reach a peace deal before President Bush steps down in January of 2009.
Rice said today (Monday) both sides are moving toward an understanding that the upcoming U.S.-sponsored conference in Annapolis, (in the eastern state of) Maryland can be a launching pad for negotiations.
She made the comments at a joint news conference with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank city of Ramallah.
Mr. Abbas said he has received encouraging signs from Israel and the United States, but expects tough going in the negotiations. He called on Israel to start meeting some of its short-term peace obligations, such as a settlement freeze.
