콘돌리자 라이스 미국 국무부 장관은 페르베즈 무샤라프 파키스탄 대통령은 군 참모총장직을 사임하고, 시민 법치를 복원해야 한다고 5일 밝혔습니다.
라이스 장관은 이 날 요르단강 서안 지구를 방문해 가진 기자회견에서 무샤라프 대통령이 군 참모총장직을 포기하겠다는 자신의 약속을 지킬 것을 촉구했습니다.
라이스 장관은 또 미국 정부는 파키스탄이 선거에 따른 헌법 질서를 되찾는 것이 최상의 길임을 믿는다고 밝혔습니다.
이에 앞서 미국은 페르베즈 무샤라프 파키스탄 대통령이 국가 비상사태를 선포함에 따라 이번주 열릴 예정이었던 파키스탄과 국방 협력 회담을 연기했다고 밝혔습니다.
11월6일과 7일, 이틀간 파키스탄 수도 이슬라마드에서 열릴 예정이었던 이번 회담에는 에릭 에델만 미국 국방차관을 단장으로 떠날 예정이었습니다.
로버트 게이츠 국방장관의 방중 일정을 수행 중인 조프 모렐 국방부 대변인은 5일 미국 국방부 당국자들은 그러나 중요한 성과를 달성하기 위해 상황이 나아지면 회담일이 다시 잡힐 것을 기대한다고 말했습니다.
한편, 콘돌리자 라이스 미국 국무장관은 4일 미국 정부는 파키스탄에 대한 원조를 재검토할 것이라고 밝혔습니다.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf should resign as army chief and restore civilian rule.
Ms. Rice (at a news conference in the West Bank) today (Monday) urged President Musharraf to carry out his promise to shed his army uniform. She also said the United States believes the best path for Pakistan is a return to constitutional rule, followed by elections.
Earlier today (Monday), the U.S. postponed a defense cooperation meeting with Pakistan planned for this week because of Mr. Musharraf's declaration of a state of emergency.
Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Eric Edelman was due to lead a Pentagon delegation to Islamabad on November sixth and seventh for the discussions.
But Pentagon spokesman (Geoff Morrell), traveling in Beijing with Defense Secretary Robert Gates, said today (Monday) that officials hope to reschedule the meeting once conditions in Pakistan improve.
Secretary Rice says the United States is review its financial aid to Pakistan -- totaling more than 10 billion dollars since 2001. Most of that aid has gone to the Pakistani military.
