미국의 콘돌리자 라이스 국무 장관은 페르베즈 무샤라프 대통령의 국가비상사태 선포를 이유로 들면서 미국은 파키스탄에 대한 경제 지원을 재검토할 것이라고 말했습니다.
미국은 지난 2001년 뉴욕과 워싱턴에서 테러 공격이 발생한 이후 대 테러전에서의 주요 동맹국인 파키스탄에 대해 백억 달러 이상의 경제 지원을 계속해 왔습니다.
라이스 장관은 무샤라프 대통령의 결정에 실망을 금치 못한다고 말하고 파키스탄 정부에 대해 합법적인 통치로의 신속한 복귀를 촉구했습니다. 라이스 장관은 그러나 테러와의 전쟁에 맞서 싸우기 위해 미국은 무샤라프 대통령과 계속 협력하길 원한다고 덧붙였습니다.
앞서 3일 미국 국방부는 파키스탄의 비상사태 선포가 그 나라에 대한 미국의 군사 지원에 영향을 끼치지 않을 것이라고 밝혔습니다. 국방부 대변인은 여러가지 이해 관계가 얽혀있다면서 로버트 게이츠 국방 장관이 파키스탄 사태를 예의주시하고 있다고 말했습니다.
한편 파키스탄 정부는 수백명의 야당 인사들을 검거하고 내년 1월 중순으로 예정된 총선 지연 가능성을 경고하는 가운데 4일 비상사태령을 더욱 강화하고 있습니다

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says the United States will review its financial aid to Pakistan because of President Pervez Musharraf's imposition of emergency rule.
The United States has given Pakistan, a major ally in its war on terror, more than 10 billion dollars since the the 2001 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington.
Secretary Rice said she was disapointed by President Musharraf's decision and called for a prompt return to constitutional rule.
She added, however, that the United States wanted to continue cooperating with General Musharraf to fight the war on terror.
Rice says the United States communicated its opposition to what she called "extra-constitutional measures" prior to Saturday's declaration of a state of emergency in Pakistan.
The Pentagon said Saturday the state of emergency will not affect U.S. military support to Pakistan. A Pentagon spokesman (Geoff Morrell) said the stakes are high and Defense Secretary Robert Gates is closely monitoring the situation.
Pakistan tightened emergency rule today (Sunday), rounding up hundreds of opposition figures and warning of a possible delay in elections set for mid-January.
During a news conference, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said the government is committed to holding general elections. But he added the parliament could take up to one year to decide when hold the ballot.
