과거 소련에서 독립한 그루지아에서 2일 민주화를 촉구하는 대규모 시위가 열렸습니다.
현지 소식통에따르면 5만명이상의 그루지아 시민들은 수도 트빌리이에 모여 미하일 샤카쉬빌리 대통령의 퇴진을 요구하는 시위를 벌였습니다. 시위대는 또 민주화를 위해 빨리 총선거를 실시할 것도 요구했습니다. 그루지아 야당과 시민들은 정부의 친서방 정책에 대해서는 대체로 지지하지만 정치적 숙청과 부정부패가 난무하고 있다며 강한 불만을 나타내고 있습니다.
특히 시위는 최근 샤카쉬빌리 대통령의 라이벌인 그루지아 전 국방장관의 강제 추방 소식이 전해진 것을 계기로 한층 격화됐습니다.
그루지아의 이번 시위는 지난 2004년 대통령 선거에 승리한 뒤 민주주의와 시장개혁을 추진해 온 샤카쉬빌리 대통령에게 최대 시련이 될 전망입니다.
More than 50-thousand Georgians have demonstrated in the capital, Tbilisi, in protest against the government of resident Mikhail Saakashvili.
The protesters gathered outside parliament Friday with a list of demands that included calls for early legislative elections, electoral reforms and restrictions on presidential power.
Parliament speaker Nino Burjanadze met with protest leaders and reiterated the government's position that the polls will take place in late 2008. But the opposition wants the elections held early next year.
Protest leaders pledged to continue the demonstrations until their demands are met. They also accused the government of blocking roads around the capital to prevent more people from joining the protests. Georgian authorities deny the charge.
Mr. Saakashvili came to power in 2003 following the so-called Rose Revolution that toppled his predecessor, Eduard Shevardnadze.
