미군 당국은 지난 금요일 심야에 태평양에 있는 군함에서 미사일을 발사한 지 수 분만에 섬에 주둔중인 육군이 요격 미사일을 발사해 태평양 상공에서 격추했다고 전했습니다.
미군 관리는 고고도방공시스템은 탄도 미사일을 패트리엇 미사일보다 높은 고도에서 격추시키도록 만들어졌다고 말했습니다.
이 시스템은 대기권 안팎에서 동시에 목표물을 격추할 수 있는 유일한 시스템입니다.
한편 이날 하와이에서 있었던 미사일 실험 발사 현장에는 이스라엘과 호주 아랍에미레이트 군사 대표단이 함께 지켜봤습니다.

The U.S. military has announced a successful test of a missile defense system that destroyed a scud-type ballistic missile outside the Earth's atmosphere.
The target missile was launched late Friday from a ship in the Pacific Ocean. It was intercepted minutes later by a ground-based missile fired from the island of Kauai in Hawaii.
Officials say the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system (or THAAD) is designed to protect troops and population centers from short and medium range ballistic missiles.
The system is part of a broader U.S. anti-missile shield and is the only system able to engage targets inside or outside the Earth's atmosphere.
Military representatives from Israel, Australia and the United Arab Emirates were in Hawaii to observe Friday's test.
