President Bush has praised the cooperation between California state authorities and the U.S. government in their response to devastating wildfires earlier.
In his weekly radio address today (Saturday) the president said state and local authorities were very well prepared for the crisis, and responded quickly and effectively.
President Bush toured the area Thursday with California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Mr. Bush pledged that federal money will be made available to those who lost their homes.
Meanwhile, thousands of southern Californians are returning to the homes they abandoned as firefighters make progress containing the fires.
But air quality is still poor, and officials warn some areas remain dangerous.
At least 12 people are believed to have died because of the blazes that have raged from Los Angeles south to the Mexican border.
