미국은 새 제재조치에서 이란 국방부와 혁명수비대가 대량살상무기를 확산시키며, 핵심부대인 쿠즈는 레바논 헤즈볼라와 아프가니스탄 탈레반의 테러활동을 지원한다고 지적했습니다.
새 제재는 이란의 국영은행 3곳과 기업, 개인 등 20여개 대상을 경제적으로 고립시키는 내용을 담고 있습니다. 특히 미국인이나 미국 내 단체가 이들과 거래하는 것을 금지했습니다.

The United States has imposed new sanctions against Iran to further pressure Tehran to halt its nuclear activities, seen as weapons-related, and end its alleged support for terrorism.
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson announced the sanctions in Washington today (Thursday). Rice said the decision was prompted by Iran's refusal to heed international demands that Tehran drop what she called its "unwise campaign" for nuclear weapons capability.
Iran has denied the charge, saying its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.
The new sanctions include designating Iran's defense ministry and Revolutionary Guard Corps as a proliferator of weapons of mass destruction and the elite al-Quds force as a supporter of terrorism for its alleged material support to terrorist groups including Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Taliban in Afghanistan.
The sanctions include measures aimed at isolating three Iranian state-owned banks and more than 20 Iranian entities, including individuals and companies. The restrictions freeze any assets the named parties may have under U.S. jurisdiction and also forbid any U.S. citizen or organization from doing business with them.
