A Nobel Prize-winning U.S. scientist has resigned from his post at a New York laboratory, a week after he was suspended from the institution for controversial remarks about race.
In a statement today (Thursday), James Watson said his retirement from the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory was "more than overdue," but that he regretted the circumstances of his departure. The 79-year-old Watson, famous for his work with DNA, held a post as chancellor of the genetic research center, where he has worked for decades.
He recently caused an uproar when he implied in an interview with a British newspaper that Africans are not as intelligent as people of developed nations. Watson later apologized.
The Federation of American Scientists said Watson used his unique stature to voice personal prejudices that are racist, vicious and unsupported by science.
