미국 캘리포니아 주 남부 지역의 산불이 사흘 동안 급속도로 번지고 있는 가운데 백여채의 고급주택들이 불타고 수십만명의 이재민이 발생했습니다. 지금까지 한명이 숨지고 십여명이 부상했습니다.
멕시코와 국경을 맞대고 있는 캘리호니아주남부, 샌디아고 지역으로 부터 북쪽으로 로스 앤젤레스인근, 말리부 까지 13건의 산불이 번져 9만 9천 헥타르 이상의 면적이 불길에 휩싸였습니다.
산불은 시속 100 킬로미터를 넘을 것으로 예상되는 거센 돌풍을 타고 번지고 있습니다.
부시 미국 대통령은 7곳의 산불 피해 지역에 비상사태를 선포하고, 연방 정부가 이들 지역의 피해 대응을 지원할 것이라고 말했습니다.
마이클 처토프 국토안보부 장관과 소방방재청 데이빗 폴리슨 청장은 23일 캘리포니아 남부 지역을 방문합니다.

Fast-moving wildfires have destroyed more than one thousand homes and forced the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of others in the (western U.S. state of) California. So far, one person has died and dozens more have been injured.
At least 13 wildfires have burned more than 99-thousand hectares in areas stretching from San Diego, near the border with Mexico, to Malibu, near Los Angeles.
The fires are being driven by strong, unpredictable winds that are predicted to exceed 100 kilometers per hour today (Tuesday).
President Bush has declared a state of emergency for seven of the affected areas. He says the federal government is sending help to aid state and local response efforts.
Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and the top administrator (David Paulison) with the Federal Emergency Management Agency will travel to southern California later today.
