중국의 후진타오 국가주석은 15일, 타이완과 평화협정을 체결하기를 원한다고 밝혔으나, 타이완의 독립을 허용하지 않을 것이라고 말했습니다.
후 주석은 이날, 베이징 인민대회당에서 열린 중국 공산당 제 17차 전국대표대회 개막식에서 “중국이 하나란 원칙하에 양안의 적대적 상태를 정식으로 끝내는 문제를 협상해 평화적 합의를 보고, 양안 관계를 평화적으로 발전시키기 위한 기틀을 마련해 새로운 지평을 열어나갈 것을 진지하게 호소한다”고 말했습니다.
타이완 정부는 이같은 후 주석의 제의를 즉각 거부했습니다.
고든 존드로 백악관 대변인은 미국은 타이완에 대한 후 주석 성명에서 드러난 온건한 입장을 환영한다고 말했습니다.

Chinese President Hu Jintao says China wants to reach a peace agreement with Taiwan, but he rejected independence for the self-ruled island.
Mr. Hu told delegates at the Communist Party Congress today (Monday) that Beijing wants to end what he called the "state of hostility" with Taiwan, but only under the "One-China" principle.
Taiwan's government quickly rejected Mr. Hu's offer.
A Bush Administration spokesman (Gordon Johndroe) said the United States welcomes what he called "the moderate tone" of Mr. Hu's statement on Taiwan. He said it is up to the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait to decide the terms and conditions under which dialogue occurs.
China considers Taiwan part of its territory. It has threatened to take military action if Taiwan's government declares formal independence. Taiwan split from the mainland in 1949 during China's civil war.
