Australian Prime Minister John Howard has called general elections for November 24th.
Mr. Howard and his conservative ruling party will face opposition Labor Party leader Kevin Rudd, a Chinese-speaking former diplomat who public opinion polls indicate has the lead in becoming the next prime minister.
The election likely will determine the future of Australia's military contribution in Iraq and Canberra's stance on global climate change.
Mr. Howard is a close ally of U.S. President Bush, and has pledged to keep Australian forces in Iraq until local troops can take care of their own security.
Mr. Rudd says if he becomes prime minister, he will withdraw about 500 combat troops from Iraq, leaving about one thousand troops to perform lesser roles in the war.
Mr. Rudd also says he will sign the Kyoto climate treaty on cutting greenhouse gas emissions. Mr. Howard has staunchly refused to sign the protocol.
