Two senior U.S. envoys have met with Turkish officials in Ankara to try to ease recent strains in U.S.-Turkish relations.
The U.S. officials (U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Dan Fried and U.S. Undersecretary of Defense Eric Edelman) promised Turkey Saturday that they would remind the Iraqi government of Turkish concerns about Kurdish rebel activity in northern Iraq.
Ankara blames Kurdish rebels based in northern Iraq for a recent series of deadly attacks in southeastern Turkey. The Turkish government is expected to seek approval from parliament next week for a military operation in northern Iraq to fight the rebels.
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice appealed Saturday for Turkey to exercise restraint. Washington fears a Turkish incursion into northern Iraq would destabilize the relatively peaceful Kurdish region.
U.S. officials also promised Ankara they would work to ensure the U.S. Congress does not approve a resolution that labels the killing of Armenians by Ottoman Turks as genocide.
