미국의 콘돌리자 라이스 국무장관은 5일, 이라크 주재 미국 대사관 경호관행을 재검토하고, 앞으로 미 외교관들에 대한 모든 호송 지원시 사설경호원들과 함께 정부의 보안요원들이 동행하도록 지시했습니다.
라이스 장관의 이같은 지시는 지난 9월 바그다드에서 미국의 사설 경호업체 블랙워터 USA 경호원들의 총기난사로 최소 11명의 민간인이 사망한데 따른 미국 보안관행 개편작업의 일환으로 나온 것입니다.
새로운 감독지침은 또한 사설 경호차량에 비데오 카메라를 설치하고, 호송대열과 미국 대사관 사이의 교통상황 등 모든 송수신 내용을 녹음하도록 했습니다.
블랙워터 사는 현재 이라크에서 미국 대사관 직원들을 경호하는 3개의 민간 경호업체들 가운데 가장 큰 회사입니다.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has ordered that U.S. government agents must accompany controversial private security guards working in Iraq.
Rice's order today (Friday) is part of a revamping of U.S. security practices following the deaths last month of at least 11 Iraqi civilians. The civilians were killed when private guards from Blackwater USA opened fire while protecting a U.S. diplomatic convoy in Baghdad.
The new oversight practices also will include installing video cameras in private security cars and recording radio traffic between the convoys and the U.S. embassy.
Blackwater is the largest of three private security firms protecting U.S. diplomats in Iraq.
An official Iraqi investigation into the September shooting found Blackwater guards fired without provocation. The U.S. military also is investigating and, according to the Washington Post, has determined that the private guards took excessive action in the incident.
