9명의 대법관으로 구성된 대법원 재판부는 오늘 6대 3으로 5년 임기의 3선을 시도하는 무샤라프 대통령의 법적 자격에 문제가 없다며 야당 정치인들의 소송을 기각했습니다.
라나 브하그완다스 대법원장은 대법원은 이번 소송이 계속 유지될 수 없음을 판결했다고 말했습니다. 그러나 야당 정치이들의 변호사들은 이번 판결에 항소할 것이라고 말했습니다.
반정부 성향의 변호사들과 야당 지지자들은 오늘 판결이 발표된 뒤 대법원 밖에서 이번 판결에 항의하는 목소리를 높였습니다.
재임을 원하는 무샤라프 대통령은 다음달 10월 6일 실시될 대통령 선거의 후보등록 절차를 27일 마쳤으며, 두 명의 야당 정치인들도 후보 등록을 마쳤습니다.
수 백명의 파키스탄 전투경찰과 보안군은 무샤라프 대통령의 재선에 항의하는 추가 시위에 대비해 수도 이슬라마바드의 거리를 봉쇄했습니다.
나와즈 샤리프 전 총리가 이끄는 파키스탄 야당 연합 소속의원들은 앞서 페르베즈 무샤라프 대통령의 연임시도에 항의해서 동반 사퇴할 계획이라고 27일 발표했습니다.
Pakistan's Supreme Court has dismissed legal challenges to President Pervez Musharraf's bid for a new term, allowing the military leader to run in next week's election while retaining his role as army chief.
In a six-to-three decision today (Friday), a judicial panel threw out several legal challenges to General Musharraf's plan for another five-year term. The head of the panel (Rana Bhagwandas) said the court found the petitions "not maintainable."
Lawyers for the opposition say they will appeal.
Anti-government lawyers and opposition supporters outside the court shouted their disapproval after the decision was announced.
General Musharraf officially has registered to run in the October sixth presidential ballot.
The Supreme Court earlier today ordered senior Pakistani officials to explain why former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was deported when he tried to return to Pakistan from exile September 10th. An August court decision said Mr. Sharif had an inalienable right to return.
