번스 차관의 25일 발언은 전날 마흐무드 아흐마디네자드 이란 대통령이 자국의 핵 개발 문제는 ‘종결된 사안’이라고 말한 데 이어 나온 것입니다.
번스 차관은 이란은 유엔안보리의 권고에 도전했으며, 국제 사회가 이를 망각할 것으로 생각한다면 아흐마디네자드 대통령의 ‘큰 실수’라고 말했습니다.
국제안보리는 앞서 이란이 핵 무기 개발에 전용될 수 있는 우라늄 농축 계획을 중단할 것을 요구했지만, 이란은 이를 거부하고 있습니다.
하지만 유엔 안보리 상임이사국 중 중국과 러시아는 아직 추가 제제를 지지하지 않고 있습니다.
한편 아흐마디네자드 대통령은 24일 유엔 총회 연설에서 유엔안보리 제재는 이기적인 권력의 불법적이고 정치적인 강요라며, 거부할 것 임을 밝혔습니다.

A top U.S. diplomat has rejected Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's contention that Tehran's nuclear program is a "closed" issue.
Under-Secretary of State Nicholas Burns says Mr. Ahmadinejad is "badly mistaken" if he thinks the international community is going to forget that Iran is defying the will of the United Nations Security Council.
Burns expressed confidence today (Wednesday) that the council will adopt a new sanctions resolution against Tehran despite reservations by China and Russia.
The Security Council has demanded that Iran suspend its uranium enrichment program, which can be used to build nuclear weapons.
In his speech to the U.N. General Assembly Tuesday, Mr. Ahmadinejad said Iran will disregard Security Council resolutions and other demands he called "unlawful and political impositions by the arrogant powers."
